Georgia sheriff escorts kindergartner of fallen deputy on first day of school
It’s often a father’s proudest moment to escort his children on their very first day of school. Unfortunately, that opportunity was robbed from a Bibb County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in the line of duty when his daughter was just three. Years later, his boss and colleagues stepped up to the plate.

Cooking With Cooke: The woman who brought NY its first ever pastry artist show
The sweet aroma of confectioners sugar and cocoa welcomed guests into the SoHo Art Gallery in Manhattan. A small, dreadheaded woman in a white apron stood nervously in a corner of the gallery, scanning the faces of each person who walked in. Their eyes wandered from wall to wall until a few landed on a painting of a black face with full lips and streaming tears outlined in white, framed by a gradient of neon teal in the center of the room, and then dropped to its carbon copy– apparently made from three different forms of sugar–sitting on a table in front of it.
Blood, Sweat and Soul Summit: A Fort Greene Tradition
In a crowd of middle-aged black folks dancing and sweating vigorously to keep up with the electronically synthesized rhythms pounding through the gravel, there’s a tall, muscular gentleman with dreads down his back. He tosses his head side to side carelessly, then forward and backward to let his hair fly free while he prances around. A woman behind him lifts her arms up and tilts her head back to face the sky before closing her eyes. She twirls around and around in her flowy, long, orange skirt until the DJ switches songs, and she adjusts her body’s movements to match the new tone.
Lesbehonest: Do you want me in the neighborhood, or not?
We finally found the end of the rainbow–and it wasn’t in the gayborhoods of Lower Manhattan. Evidently, it’s in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where New York City has made plans to open the Ingersoll Senior Residences. It will be the city’s first ever affordable housing specifically designed for LGBT elders. Despite Manhattan harboring a majority of the LGBT-friendly resources and centers, Brooklyn still seems like a very promising choice for a project of this sort over places like Chelsea and Greenwich Village–areas with a higher gay population.
Dancing around the Topic: Police-Community Relations
While Fortnite characters, Spiderman look-alikes and unicorns will definitely be found ringing doorbells and begging for candy on the final night of October 2018, it’s less likely that a 3-foot policeman will be amongst the sugar-thirsty canvassers. Officers haven’t been a top halloween costume amongst children in years, which makes complete sense in a neighborhood like Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Based on the documentary, what does The Long Walk mean to you, as soon-to-be graduates of Howard University?
Mice in the dorms, broken hearts in the valley, hour long-waits in the A-Building and flat soda in the cafe fade to black as mere memories from the past while the image of Founders Library replaces them. The sky is so blue and I just don’t recall it ever looking so beautiful. This warm May day encouraged a rich, unforgettable hue without a cloud in the sky to taint its glory. The girl next to me tells her followers on Instagram Live that today is the day. She says we overcame adversity and now we’ve made it. Today, we are graduates of THE Howard University! Suddenly, I can feel the weight of my legs being pulled into the ground and it forces me to acknowledge each step we take as advancements toward our destinies. Everything “Howard” we leave behind us as we march closer and closer to our futures. I don’t know what comes next, but my God–it feels like the longest walk ever!
The Warmest Winter Ever
It’s really funny to me how sometimes in life we end up places or in situations that we never meant to be in, and how they have the abilities to change our lives forever. I think that that’s what happened to me the night I met Erin Winters. I didn’t even mean to be there in the first place. I remember that it was 5:45 PM in the midst of what seemed to be the longest day of my life. I had been awake since 4:00 AM and had already had two existential crises and a full on meltdown before sundown. I had left my previous class in tears and buried my sorrows in Punch Out fries. I was planning on sulking my way back to the West Towers where I could finally rest my tired eyes.
And then my phone buzzed.
